Housing

There are around 4000 households in the Western Isles represented by someone aged 65+ years, and more than half of those comprise of a single person living alone.

The vast majority (79%) own their home, while 14% live in social rented housing (Hebridean Housing Partnership or Trust Housing Association properties – see details below) and just 7% in the private rented sector.

The Comhairle no longer owns houses for rent but is still responsible for the production and monitoring of the Local Housing Strategy, and also directly delivers, financially supports, or can provide advice and information on a number of housing and related services which may be of particular interest to older households. Links or contact details to these are provided below.

The Housing Services Team is based at the Comhairle Offices on Sandwick Road, Stornoway, and can be contacted on 01851 822 691.  The Comhairle’s Local Housing Strategy 2011-2016 is available on the Comhairle’s homepage.
