Island Bake Club – Show off your baking skills!

Island Bake ClubThe new Island Bake Club has started up in the Western Isles, where cake connoisseurs can get together and share their best baking dos and don’ts.

The Island Bake Club meets on the third Wednesday of every month between 7pm and 9pm. There’s a theme for each month and the only condition is that you bring a home baked cake that fits in with this theme. Think of it as your very own Great British Bake Off; there’s even a chance to nominate someone as a Star Baker. It’s time to get creative and see what delicious treats you can conjure up.

The group will meet at The Decca in Lionel in March and North Tolsta Hall in April, but you can stay up to date by emailing: islandbakeclub@outlook.com.

More details about the group and what they do can be found on their website. You can also follow them on Facebook (Island Bake Club) or Twitter.

Let’s Talk About Dementia

Alzheimer Scotland Logohttp://www.alzscot.org/conversation

A new campaign was recently launched by Alzheimer Scotland to promote the importance of early support and information.

The worry that someone, perhaps even you, might have dementia is one of the hardest issues any of us will have to face. However, having difficult conversations about dementia – with partners, with family and friends, or with medical professionals – can make a huge difference to someone’s future quality of life. To access the site visit:http://www.alzscot.org/conversation

An STV interview can also be viewed which helps explain further and some interesting footage around the importance of music as a therapeutic activity – to access simply visit: http://news.stv.tv/video/4031874217001/

Training and Support for Family Carers

logo - western isles community care forumThe Carers Trainers Project offers training along with independent support to unpaid carers in their own home.  The Western Isles Community Care Forum (WICCF) employs a full-time trainer to cover Lewis & Harris and a part-time trainer to cover Uist & Barra.

Moving & Handling training is tailored to meet the needs of the individual carer and aims to reduce the risk of injury. Having this knowledge will make the caring role easier and WICCF would recommend that all carers undertake at least the basic awareness of moving & handling procedures.

Personal foot care training is delivered to carers to educate them about maintenance between podiatry appointments or, if they are not in receipt of podiatry services, general maintenance. Many myths exist around personal foot care which can be discussed with the carer, along with general advice around footwear.

WICCF trainers will offer Carers Assessments to carers and can assist in the completion of these forms, if required. Continue reading

Don’s Story

Don image 1The 12th November is a date that will always stick in my mind. It was on this date in 2013 that I was told that I had stomach cancer. To say I was in shock is an understatement.

I had suffered from arthritis from years of physical activity as part of my job and had been taking diclofenac pain killers for about four months to control my pain. I noticed that every time I ate I would be sick. I didn’t feel nauseous or anything – just couldn’t keep anything down. I blamed the tablets, stopped taking them and the sickness stopped. However, I carried on losing weight and had no energy. After lots of nagging from my wife I decided to go to the doctor who decided to investigate my weight loss and loss of energy.

Over the next three weeks I had an endoscopy, scan, examination, and an appointment with my consultant on the 12th November. This was when I was told that I had stomach cancer. Continue reading

Men’s 5K Cancer Challenge: Saturday 22nd November

Men's 5K 2014Following the success of last year’s Men’s Cancer 5K, this year’s event will be held on Saturday 22nd November – and take place from the Castle Green, Lews Castle Grounds in Stornoway.

To download your entry form and sponsorship form simply visit http://www.promotionswi.scot.nhs.uk/

Also available to download is a copy of the poster incase you wish to promote the event within your workplace – as well as a 30 day activity record to help men increase their physical activity levels (if they wish to) in preparation for the event.

Last year saw almost 200 men, of all ages, participate, with almost £4,000 being raised and donated to our local Hebridean Men’s Cancer Support Group, to help local men with Cancer, and their families.

The Group have informed us that this year to date, they have provided financial support to over 70 men from the islands affected by Cancer, as well as using funds to help raise awareness of the Group and the sterling work they do.

So this year, let’s see how much better we can all do together!
